Proclamation No. 229 of 1966
A Proclamation to Provide for
the Protection and Preservation of Antiquities
WHEREAS, the ancient monuments, written documents and other relics which exist in Ethiopia bear witness to the stitute the heritage and birthright of all Ethiopians; and

WHEREAS, it is essential that provision be made for the discovery, protection, preservation and study of such ancient monuments and relics ;
CONQUERING LION OF THE TRIBE OF JUDAH
ELECT OF GOD, EMPEROR OF ETHIOPIA
NOW, THEREAS, in accordance with Articles 34 and 88 of Our Revised Constitution. We approve the resolutions of Our Senate and Chamber of Deputies and We hereby pro claim as follows:
This Proclamation may be cited as the " Antiquities Pro elanation. 1966. ”
In this Proclamation, unless the context otherwise re quires:
(a) " antiquity " shall mean any construction or any pro duct of human activity, or any object of historical
or archaeological interest, having its origin prior to
(b) " Administering Authority " shall mean the head of the Office of Archaeology ;
(c) " person " shall mean any physical or juridical per son, including any Church and any other organisa tion.
State Ownership of Antiquities
(a) All antiquities, whether movable or immovable, existing within Ethiopia on the date of coming into force
